Duplicate Bridge Terminology
ACBL The American Contract Bridge League is the governing body of duplicate bridge in North America.

Masterpoints

  • When you place in the top 40% at an ACBL sanctioned game, you earn masterpoints.

  • Masterpoints come in different pigments, for example at a club game the points are typically 'black'; at a Sectional Tournament points are 'Silver' etc.

  • The ACBL awards rankings to players according to their masterpoint holdings.

Life Master

  • The rank of Life Master is the coveted rank of all new ACBL players.

  • For more information on ranks and how to achieve them, see: ACBL.

OPEN Pairs

  • This is the most common type of duplicate bridge.

  • You and your partner play against many other pairs for the duration of the session.

  • Your scores for each hand are recorded on a slip of paper or in the electronic scoring system.

  • When the session is over the director announces the results.

  • All levels of players are allowed to play in the OPEN Pairs games.

NLM Pairs

  • Non Life Master Pairs.

  • This is the the same as OPEN Pairs, except that no one who has achieved the rank of Life Master may play in this session.

0-200 Pairs

  • Anyone with fewer than 200 masterpoints may play at this game.

Swiss Teams

  • A team of four competes against another team of four for several hands.

  • They then score those hands with their teammates and report the result.

  • Next they play a different team of four, score and report.

  • This continues to the end of the session when a winner is declared.
